Rakugo is more than just story telling. Through the duration of each story the rakugo performer incorporates creative gestures with the use of two props, a fan and a hand cloth. As a story teller, the rakugo performer helps create the setting for the audience to better use their imagination and enjoy the story. The type of Japanese used for each character also assists the audience with their imagination. Therefore, rakugo is not only a a creative story telling tradition, but also an insight into Japanese language and culture.
